DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Downtown Durham has a handful of black-girls-owned groups — with greater simply beginning.
Megan George and Morgan Siegel are two girls making their marks on the corner of Market and Chapel Hill streets close to the Bull in downtown Durham.
George owns The Zen Succulent, a current terrarium, plant and present shop.
Next door, Siegel is the proprietor of Jeddah’s Tea, a tearoom that specialize in natural, vegan-friendly teas from around the arena.
“It’s powerful to be proper beside any person who is additionally like myself. African-American enterprise owner, lady, doing something for her circle of relatives — simply as I’m doing for mine,” George said of Siegel.
Siegel turned into equally complimentary.
“We have such synergy among our businesses,” Siegel said. “Her aesthetic is so gorgeous and delightful and full and shiny and green — and mine is a little more grandma’s residence.”
The two friends are a part of what researchers say is a national surge of black women owning groups.
The 2018 State of Women-Owned Businesses record showed a 164 percentage increase in view that 2007.
George and Siegel say black ladies often experience put in a container and not given the identical possibilities to be successful. But they are saying packages and assets provided by way of the City of Durham, Self-Help and Downtown Durham Inc., have helped.
“Gentrification is real, and black business do get pushed out. But I think there are humans in locations of choice-making which are seeking to bring black commercial enterprise again to the vanguard,” Siegel said.
“I do not think we may want to have performed this or on this way, this quick with out that additional hand down for us,” George said.
Their message to black girls intending to be entrepreneurs: Overcome some thing fears you have got and turn your passion and side-hustle into your nine-to-5.
“Do not be afraid to share that idea,” George said.
She cited that aspiring entrepreneurs may also fear their thoughts may get taken and used. But she said that should not maintain them again.
“Share. Because it’s how you clear out your designs for your precise save and your desires,” she stated.
Siegel said to comply with and broaden your gift.
“We each have some thing unique to provide the arena and I truly encourage ladies and young women to undertaking that belief,” Siegel said. “I encourage my daughter who commenced her candle enterprise.
